Visiting the PEN World Voices Festival of International Literature: NYC, April 29-May 5, 2013

If you are a supporter or literature then you will not want to miss the PEN World Voices Festival of International Literature. This show had its opening night on Monday, April 29, 2013, 7:00pm but continues through the week with readings until May 5^th.

This event celebrates bravery in art and democracy in politics, and the raw, sheer peaks and nadirs in modern life. The festival this year features a stellar roster of authors, including Joy Harjo, a major voice in Native American Renaissance’s second wave;award-winning Caribbean writers Jamaica Kincaid and Earl Lovelace; Najwan Darwish, “one of the 39 best Arab writers under the age of 40”; Mikhail Shishkin, one of the foremost contemporary Russian writers; Ursula Krechel, winner of the German Book Prize in 2012 ; Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Air Force David Frakt, celebrated internationally as a champion for human rights following his defense of Guantanamo prisoner Mohammed Jawad; Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserve Darrel Vandeveld, who resigned from his post as prosecutor for the U.S. Military Commissions, in protest for the lack of due process given to the detainees at Guantanamo; up-and-coming Nigerian author A. Igoni Barrett, whose new book Love Is Power, Or Something Like That, is due out in May; and Vaddey Ratner, asurvivor of the Khmer Rouge's brutal reign in Cambodia, and author of In the Shadow of the Banyan, a New York Times bestseller.  This event is hosted by comedian Baratunde Thurston, formerly of the satirical newspaper The Onion and author of the bestselling How To Be Black.
